Retargeting 101: Bringing Back Visitors Who Didn't Convert

By TrafficToProfit Editorial 6 min read Updated 2026

Most people who visit your website or click your ad for the first time don't buy right away — even if they're genuinely interested. They get distracted, they compare a couple of options, they mean to come back later and forget. Retargeting is how you stay in front of them until they're ready.

What Retargeting Actually Is

Retargeting (sometimes called remarketing) shows ads specifically to people who already visited your website, watched your video, or engaged with your social page — rather than to strangers who've never heard of you. Platforms like Meta and Google let you build these "warm" audiences automatically based on a small tracking pixel installed on your site.

Why It Works So Well

  • You're advertising to people who already showed real interest, not cold strangers
  • Cost per click and cost per lead are typically lower than cold campaigns
  • It reinforces your brand — the fifth time someone sees your name, they trust it more than the first

Simple Retargeting Setups That Work

1. Website visitors who didn't fill out a form

Anyone who visited your site but didn't convert sees a follow-up ad — often with a stronger offer or a testimonial they hadn't seen yet.

2. Video viewers

Anyone who watched a meaningful chunk of your video ad (even without clicking) gets shown a more direct, action-focused follow-up.

3. Past customers

People who already bought from you are the easiest group to sell to again — retargeting them with a seasonal offer or referral incentive is often the highest ROI campaign a business can run.

What to Avoid

Retargeting can feel invasive if overdone. Cap how many times the same person sees your ad per week, and rotate creative regularly so it doesn't feel like the exact same ad is chasing them everywhere.

Getting Started

  1. Install the Meta Pixel and/or Google tag on your website
  2. Let it collect visitor data for at least a couple of weeks before launching a campaign
  3. Build a simple "all website visitors, last 30 days" audience as your first retargeting campaign
  4. Expand into more specific audiences (video viewers, past customers) once the basics are working

Retargeting is one of the cheapest, highest-return pieces of a marketing funnel — and one of the most commonly skipped by businesses running ads on their own for the first time.
